It has been about a month since we started our new club term, and also about a month since I was installed as the 11th President of the Redding Active 20-30 Club. To be honest, things have been a bit of a blur…taking over the Presidency requires a lot of legwork and paperwork!
Nevertheless, even though I’ve been spending a lot of my time dealing with that, our term is off to a great start! Planning is well underway for our Back to School Shopping Spree on August 14. This year, we will again be taking 40 kids back to school shopping for clothes, shoes, new backpacks, and much more. These are kids who could not otherwise afford to buy these things. It’s one of the events I look forward to most out of the many we do, because it’s so great seeing these children get to have the things they desperately need to succeed in school. We are also gearing up to kick off an ad campaign to honor our Active 20-30 Club contributors for 2016: Foothill Distributing, Tri-Counties Bank, Sierra Pacific Industries, and Cattlemen’s Restaurant. The contributions we’ve received from these organizations has helped us greatly to put on our charitable events this year, and we’re glad to count them among our Club’s supporters.
And that’s just the start! We have our usual slate of great events coming up over the next year, such as our two biggest fundraisers, the Sundial Film Festival and the Redding Lighted Christmas Parade, and children’s events such as the Frank Sawyer Memorial Kids Fishing Day. I think this could very well be the best year the club has had, and I’m glad to be a part of it!
Ben Dykstra, President - Redding#143
With a lot of sweat and help from Sunset Rotary, we recently completed the transition of One SAFE Place’s playground to the new Sierra Center and held our largest Back-to-School Shopping spree to date, taking 40 kids back-to-school shopping. These two activities epitomize the mission of our club, “…improving the quality of life for the special needs of children in their community”. Neither of these projects would have been possible without the support of our community and the 20-30 club’s efforts to increase collaboration with other non-profits in our area.
With this work comes increased publicity and awareness of our club that has helped our club grow to 33 members as of this writing with many new members on the horizon. I am looking forward to the growth, as are all of our members that have worked so hard over the years for our club. With these new members come fresh energy, ideas, and perspectives. Many hands make light work and will empower our club to make an even bigger impact on our community.
I look forward to the rest of this fiscal year and seeing what our club can do!
